VIDEO – ‘Helper’s Hell’ – Must-see TVB Report Examines Why & How Helpers are Abused

A new 25-minute TVB documentary, ‘Helpers’ Hell’, was broadcast on Monday. It gives historical context to the epidemic of helper abuse in Hong Kong and examines how the law makes the situation worse. The Pearl Report investigation is also currently available on TVB.com.

Hong Kong has come under the international spotlight for torturing foreign domestic workers. Many locals say these are isolated cases, abhorrent nevertheless. The Pearl Report examines how and why some bosses would abuse their maids, and whether inadequate government policies and social support systems might contribute to the situation. NGOs say foreign migrant workers need more protection and more follow up help from employment agencies and government funding for services while they work in HK.
